Planning to study abroad? Then you will have to take the TOEFL exam and get good scores to apply to various good colleges. The TOEFL measures your English proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking - four skills that you need for success in school.
In this lesson, we will discuss the Reading section and will talk about the type of each question type you will encounter:
- Facts / Details: In these questions you are expected to know specific information found in the passage. However it is easy as it's always possible to find the answer, since it can be found directly in the passage.
- Confusing questions: These questions are based on negative facts because they often ask for the wrong answer, not the right answer. These questions are easily identified because they contain the negative words like 'except', 'not', 'neither'
- Vocabulary: Vocabulary questions ask for meanings of specific words that are closest in meaning out of all four possible answers.
- Purpose: These questions will ask the reason, or rationale behind a reading passage or portion of a reading passage. In most cases, the word 'purpose' is actually found in this type of question.
- Rephrasing: These questions will say the same thing in different words. In the TOEFL, paraphrase questions will ask you to choose a sentence that is like a specific highlighted sentence within the passage.
- Summarizing: You're asked to make a summary of six sentences. You are often asked to choose three out of six that most closely resemble a topic given to you - all of which are related to the reading passage.
